What does an AI FDE actually do?
What does an AI FDE actually do?

A forward-deployed engineer embeds with your team and moves the highest-value AI work toward production.
An AI forward-deployed engineer (FDE) is not a visiting strategist and not a ticket-taking contractor. The mandate is narrower:
Sit with the customer’s engineering team and move the highest-value AI work toward production.
What that looks like week to week
The work changes. That is the point. In one month the constraint is “which workflow is worth it.” In the next it is evaluation. In the next it is IAM, spend, or a failing tool path.
Typical motion:
- Find or refine the opportunity with people who run the process
- Build the smallest experiment that produces evidence
- Engineer the surrounding system: integrations, permissions, eval, observability
- Harden what is already in front of users
- Leave artifacts the team can operate — code, runbooks, backlog — not a private notebook
What it is not
- Hours of “AI expertise” billed for meetings
- A chatbot build shop
- A transformation program that never ships a workload
- A substitute for your own engineering organization
If the engagement cannot name a workload and a production constraint, it is not FDE work yet. It is still discovery — which we productize as an Opportunity Sprint, not as vague retainers.
Why “forward-deployed”
The hard problems are in your environment: identity, data classification, change management, the system of record, the people who will get paged. Those do not show up in a generic architecture diagram.
An FDE is useful because they bring production-AI engineering into that environment, then leave the system in your repo and your operating model.
How this relates to a sprint
A Production Sprint is a bounded build of one use case. Fractional AI Engineering is the ongoing form of the same mandate: keep advancing the next highest-value opportunity, including when last month’s bet changes.
If you already work with Level Up on automation or platform engineering, this is the same embedding habit — applied to models, agents, and the controls they require.
